Pink Floyd (formed in 1965 in Cambridge, England) are a British rock band, famous for their songwriting, densely layered studio recordings, striking album art and elaborate live shows. Pink Floyd are one of rock's most successful acts, ranking seventh in number of albums sold worldwide with more than 200 million albums sold.
Pink Floyd enjoyed moderate success in the mid-1960s as a psychedelic band lead by Syd Barrett. After Barrett left the band, Pink Floyd, lead by guitarist/singer David Gilmour and bass-player/singer/lyricist Roger Waters, recorded several elaborate concept albums, finding worldwide success with 1973's Dark Side of the Moon and 1979�s The Wall, two of the best-selling and most perennially popular albums in rock history.
Waters left Pink Floyd in 1984 and the remaining band members have recorded and toured sporadically since. Waters rejoined them at the London Live 8 concert on July 2, 2005, playing to their biggest audience ever.
