After being voted "Artist of the Year" in Downbeat's 2000 poll, jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard returned with Let's Get Lost. Let's Get Lost features new interpretations of the great standards of legendary composer Jimmy McHugh, one of the giants of the golden age of the American popular song. Appearing with Blanchard on the CD are four singers of diverse and distinct talents: Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, Dianne Reeves and Cassandra Wilson.
The release of Let's Get Lost follows the critical acclaim for Blanchard's most recent Sony Classical recording Wandering Moon, for which he earned a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Jazz Solo Performance. Wandering Moon was also voted "Jazz Album of the Year" in the Downbeat 2000 poll, in which Blanchard was named "Trumpeter of the Year" as well.
Jazz superstar Diana Krall contributes both piano and vocals to the title track "Let's Get Lost".
Cassandra Wilson, whom Newsweek recently noted is "widely recognized by critics as the best jazz singer of her generation," joins Blanchard and his quintet on two tracks. The first is a contemporary reading of "Don't Blame Me" and then for the McHugh classic "Sunny Side of yhe Street".
Dianne Reeves is one of the most respected singers in jazz. The Seattle Times raved for "her three-plus, pellucid octaves, diva-like delivery and intimate sense of a song that have long made her one of the most compelling vocalists in jazz." Performing two McHugh standards "I Can't Believe that You're in Love with Me" and "Can't Get Out of this Mood," Reeves brings warmth and sensuality to these songs.
At the age of 23, Jane Monheit has already emerged as one of the new stars of jazz recording. For Let's Get Lost, she joins Blanchard and his ensemble for "Too Young to Go Steady" and the song that is perhaps McHugh's best-known, "I Can't Give You Anything but Love."
Blanchard's quintet performs instrumental versions of "You're a Sweetheart", which deconstructs at its end into a typical New Orleans small ensemble improvisation; two arrangements by Simon, "I'm in the Mood for Love" and "Exactly Like You" drenched in thick, minor-key harmonies that are introduced with chiming chords, and "Lost in a Fog", which showcases what Blanchard is admired for the most -- his ability to meld together lush, emotionally evocative melodies.
